Breed: German Shepherd
Adoption fee: $550
Rex is a 4 year old German Shepherd and one of the largest we've ever seen! He is a late bloomer who hasn’t had the best start to life but has now learnt all the doggy manners he should have learnt as a puppy. A lover of food and toys, he is easy to train but a little willful. Since coming to BFAR he has learnt to sit, drop, walk calmly on the lead, wait at doorways and the gate, leave items of interest, shake hands and respect “no go” zones.
Being such a large and strong dog, Rex needs a human who understands and is confident with large dogs, is committed to his ongoing training and weight loss program, and either is home for most of the day, or has a medium to large female dog for company. Gentle play is something that Rex is working on so he is not suitable for a family with primary school aged children but would be fine with those visiting. Very noisy and scary if someone comes to the gate or door, he turns into a gentle giant once the visitor has been invited in.
He loves the beach and swims out past the breakers to retrieve his ball. Swimming several times a week is part of his weight loss regime so a coastal residence is desirable but not essential. Rex has had some frightening experiences with other dogs and has become dog reactive, but this is being worked on by his foster carer with professional help.
Good with confident cats and other animals once introduced. Hates birds and rats in the yard, bouncy dogs in his face, or aggressive dogs. Easy to bathe and groom
